Dear Parents/Carers,

As we head towards the end of Year 11, I want to inform you of opportunities for your child following the May 28th leaving date. The Academy has a responsibility to offer your child educational opportunities that should include careers development and wider next stage topics such as preparation for Post 16, employment or training.

Our website contains extensive careers advice at the following location:

http://charlton.uk.com/parent-student-information/careers-and-enterprise

Within this section you will find a “Where Next” button to take you to a large number of our Post 16 partners websites, including the Shrewsbury College website which includes a number of pre-learning tasks that students can complete prior to starting their chosen courses next year.

The Learning Community Trust have worked closely with Telford College, Shrewsbury College and the National Citizenship Service (NCS) to produce an offer that will meet all of our students’ needs.

  • Shrewsbury College will contact students directly who have applied for courses, to arrange induction opportunities.
  • NCS have been actively recruiting students in our schools for the summer programme, over 30 students have signed up from Charlton.
  • Telford College is offering a wide range of A level and Vocational taster sessions, careers advice and learning skills for all students, regardless of what Post 16 placement they are going to attend in September.

This is a fantastic opportunity that the college is offering our students and we strongly encourage your child to attend. The college is offering transport and food with their staff supervising the events.

Please read the below details from Telford College and complete the form if your child wants to take a place. The form needs to be returned to school on MONDAY 24th MAY and handed to your tutor.

Telford College Information – Open to every LCT student

Starting on Wednesday 9th June to Friday 11th June, Telford college will be running events to support all Year 11 students transitioning from school to Post 16 study, even those who are going to other colleges in September.

Your child will have the opportunity to take part in talks which prepare them for A Level and vocational studies and beyond. There will be a focus on academic skills and what students need to do to prepare for their college study.

Your child will have careers talks which ask them to consider the different options available, including university, apprenticeships and employment.

Students will be taking part in A Level taster sessions, led by experienced teachers and supported by existing A Level students. Students must sign up to the tasters in advance. This broad range will support them in decision making and ensuring they are on the right course.

Vocational Tasters will enable students to see the industry standard facilities we have at Telford College. Students will see the technical areas which they will be working in, meet the staff and experience a mini lesson in the vocational area of their choice. There are tasters available in Engineering, Construction, Automotive, Hair and Beauty, Catering, Health, Early Years, Music, Art, Media, Computing and Business. Students might like to attend more than one taster to ensure they have considered all their options.

It will be fantastic to see students being able to attend onsite and experience our campus. We have a series of other events throughout the summer, including an Open Evening on 23rd June. We are really pleased that the LCT students can attend this event and know that they will leave excited about their Post 16 study.

Transport and Food:

  • Coaches to pick students up from each of the schools at 9.30am or 12.30pm depending on start time of taster session. Your child will return by coach to the schools at the end of the event. It is parental responsibility to collect from the schools
  • Lunch will be provided

The Taster sessions:

  • We need students to sign up to the taster sessions in advance, so we ensure they are getting a good experience.

Next Steps:

PLEASE COMPLETE THE TIMETABLE

AND RETURN TO YOUR TUTOR BY MONDAY 24th MAY

Summer:

  • Pre A Level work will be updated on our website and sent to all applicants.
  • Pre Vocational work will be updated on our website. This is to support students in their transition to college.
  • A video will be uploaded to our website so students are prepared and understand college expectations and what August/September will look like.
  • Campus Tours can be booked on an individual family basis through our student services.
  • A Level enrolment will take place on GCSE results day – 12th August and continue on 13th
  • Vocational enrolment will take place from 17th August to 24th

Whilst attendance at the events is optional, we believe that our students should access the outstanding offer provided by our local college. This form needs to be returned to school by Monday 24th May, so the college has time to prepare for such a large scale event.

Yours sincerely,

Mr A McNaughton

Principal
