Filtermist is always keen to support initiatives which aim to engage young people with engineering and manufacturing, so when we were approached by Charlton School student, Joe O’Loughlin, asking for sponsorship for his team’s F1 in Schools entry we agreed immediately.

The main objective of F1 in Schools ‘is to help change the perceptions of science, technology, engineering and maths by creating a fun and exciting learning environment for young people to develop an informed view about careers in engineering, Formula 1, science, marketing and technology.’

Joe explained that his team. Gear Shift, included students from Years 10 and 11 and each had a designated role – his was securing sponsorship, whilst other roles included team leader and members responsible for the logo design and CAD for the vehicle.

The Secondary Regional Final competition was hosted at In-Comm Training’s facility in Telford on Wednesday 26th April and Gear Shift came second over-all – landing them a place in the National Finals in June. They also received the ‘Lighting Reaction Time’ award for their use of the race gun to launch the car, and the ‘Team Identity award’ for their excellent branding and identity created across the event.

Lydia Barber, Director of Group Marketing at Filtermist comments, “F1 in Schools is a brilliant way of introducing young people to the opportunities afforded by a career in our industry. We were delighted to be able to support the Charlton team and the fact the competition was hosted at our neighbour and training partner In-Comm was even better!

“Being able to see inside premises that are home to engineering and manufacturing applications really helps to bring the industry to life. Hopefully at least some of the young people that took part in the challenge will be inspired to find out more about what careers are available and next steps in terms of training and apprenticeships.”
