Dear Parents and Carers

At Charlton our intent is to nurture happy, healthy young people who have the knowledge, academic achievement and strength of character to lead safe and successful lives in modern Britain, preparing them for their next steps in education or employment with a thirst for lifelong learning. We ensure that every member of our school community knows that we are committed to supporting their physical health, safety, and emotional wellbeing throughout their journey with us.

As part of this, students study personal health and wellbeing, as well as online and offline safety, through a comprehensive Personal Development curriculum.

An important part of the Relationships and Health and Wellbeing strands is Relationships and Sex Education (RSE). Relationship and Sex Education is taught as part of the broader PSHE curriculum. The aim of our RSHE curriculum is to give our students the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds, not just intimate relationships. It should enable them to know what a healthy relationship looks like and what makes a good friend, a good colleague and a successful marriage or other type of committed relationship. It also covers contraception, developing intimate relationships and resisting pressure to have sex, as well as not applying pressure within their own behaviour. This term your child will be studying the following:

  • Organ Donation and Blood Donation
  • Teenage Pregnancy
  • Abortion Laws, Morals and Ethics
  • Testicular and Prostrate Cancer
  • Cervical, Breast and Ovarian Cancer
  • Parenthood
  • Love and Abuse

Please support them with conversations at home surrounding the topics covered this term. If you would like further information on the delivery of RSE at Charlton you can view the personal development handbook here: https://www.charlton.uk.com/parent-student-information/curriculum/personal-development-handbook-and-curriculum-intent or the RSE policy here: https://www.charlton.uk.com/media/43936/relationship-and-sex-education-policy.pdf

Many thanks for your continued support.

Yours faithfully

A Vickers
