Candidate 1 Mrs Kerry Downes-Ward

Candidate 2 Mr Alex Johnson

Candidate 3 Mr Karl Edwards

I am Kerry, forever 21, regardless of the decades that have since past! I am a Mum to 5 children aged 8 –15 years, 2 of whom have additional needs (ASD); therefore, I am very aware of the struggles, fights and challenges my fellow parents face, as do our children. I have 2 children at Charlton with another joining in September 2023.

I wear a few different hats; I am part of the debt team at the local Citizens Advise and very aware of the financial pressure pot being faced. I have good links with Thrive, Telford Crisis and the Local Authority.

I also volunteer with a fabulous charity called PODS (parent/carers who have children with additional needs) in this role I assist at events and in the role as a Befriender- 1:2:1, offering a listening ear and support. I also provide an independent service, whereby I assist and support people with their benefit form fills such as PIP, DLA, Carers etc, as this can be a tremendous stressor for many.

In my spare time, as I find the subject matter interesting, I am a 3rd year Criminology and Psychology Student.

I hope you will consider voting me into the position as Parent Governor as I sincerely care about my/our children, their schooling and the big, though sometimes scary wider world out there - Thank You.

I would like to be considered for the role of Parent Governor, to aid Charlton in continuing to develop opportunities for all students both inside and outside the classroom. The school has an outstanding family feel and I would like to be part of its continued progression.

I am a father of two boys, my eldest started Year 7 at Charlton in September. Having lived and worked in Telford my whole life I am fully aware of the issues communities face. I have worked in education for 16 years, currently as Head of IT and Computing at another school in Telford, with additional responsibilities in the areas of Timetabling, Human Resources, Data Analysis and E-Safety. With a degree in Business Management and IT systems, I feel I can assist the Governors in a wide range of different areas.

Outside of teaching I am a keen sports man, particularly Hockey, playing for Telford & Wrekin Hockey Club and England Masters sides. I understand how important it is to feel involved and valued as an individual, which is something everyone, particularly students, should feel in their everyday lives. I have held many positions of responsibility within these clubs, always looking for ways to develop and inspire others. Having recently stepped down from being First XI Captain of the hockey club, I still want to devote my time to helping others and I feel that being a Governor is the perfect opportunity.

I have worked in the Construction Industry for 24 years, starting off as a Bricklayer’s Hoddy for a local family business. I then had an opportunity to move into the Rail Sector for an international company. Whilst working with the international company I was involved in a trial that focused on culture and the mindsets of people. I found it really interesting and realised I had a skill for designing and delivering presentations that were unique, engaging, and different from the ‘norm’. I use a variety of psychology techniques that allows people to understand how they think and operate daily.  I currently own and run 2 businesses within the Construction Sector. One designs and implements Cultural Programmes for organisations in the UK and Europe. The second is a recruitment-based company that supplies blue and white-collar resource to companies in the UK and Europe. I believe the role as a Parent Governor would be a great fit for me as I have mass experience with every role within an organisation, from core teams to directors, including people from all social and ethnic backgrounds. I have been educating and helping businesses for the past 12 years so I believe it would be positive to bring that skill set to the education sector as the children are our future workforce, engineers, QS, leaders within the construction sector and am sure I could have a positive influence.

I would love to be considered as Parent Governor at Charlton because I feel I can bring a variety of skills and experiences. I was born and raised in Telford and then went on to study Accounting and Finance in Shrewsbury. During my working years I have worked at an Accountancy, Quality Control Manager after completing my ISO certificate, worked at a Web Design company and then went on to start a new business from scratch with my husband in 2009, the business is still active and looking to expand this year to take on apprenticeships. I deal with all aspects of the business from accounting to networking. I want to put my free time into giving back to the school.

My son currently attends Charlton, he is a SEN student in year 7 with ASD, the SEN team at Charlton have been amazing. I have a certificate in understanding Autism, I have been asked to help assist the POD’s team. I love a new challenge and with each new challenge I put 100% in, becoming a Governor will mean I will be able to give back and support the team further, with input and experiences from a parents and child’s point of view. If I am chosen to be Governor, I feel I can bring fresh, new ideas to the board. I am compassionate and understanding and will look at all points of view, I am a strong believer in mental wellbeing. I feel I would be an asset to the board.

I have been living in Telford for most of my life and have also been educated at Charlton School.  I hold a degree in Economics, and Marketing.  My career has been spent working across England and Wales, a considerable period of which was spent in London.  In the last 10 years, I have worked within the Social Care, Health and Education sectors, at a senior level.  I have held previous positions of governorships, charity board trustees and non-executive director roles.  I believe I can bring real value to the board of Governors with my experience and background.  It also gives me a chance to help shape the future of our young people, in a school which propelled me to have such a successful future.
