Owen
Owen House is named after the famous poet and soldier, Wilfred Owen. He started out life in the backstreets of Birkenhead. But after leaving school he worked to get into the University College, Reading (now the University of Reading) and eventually started work as a private tutor teaching English and French at the Berlitz School of Languages in Bordeaux,France.

It was when he joined the Army in 1915 at age 22 that he composed some of his most famous poetry, including 'Dulce et Decorum Est'and 'Anthem for Doomed Youth'. A lot of his poetry is about the horrors and futility of war and this is because he wrote poetry as a therapy for some of the psychological traumas he experienced. The House Leaders say "Wilfred Owen is an inspiration because he is intelligent and brave. He fought for his country on the front line and despite all that he went through wrote poetry that is still today regarded as some of the best. We think that those qualities and achievements are things we can all aspire to."
